Venturing Crew

Scouting, With a STEM Twist

STEM Venturing Crew 111 is a Scouting America crew with a science, technology, engineering, and math focus, for young people ages 14 to 20.

The crew is youth-led. Its officers pick the topics and activities, run the meetings, and decide where the adventures go. Adult advisors keep it safe and help make it happen.

Newburgh Creates is the Venturing crew's chartered organization, so the group meets at our studio and has the run of our robots, 3D printers, and tools. The crew has its own website with the full story, the calendar, and a blog.

What the Crew Does

A STEM Topic Every Month

Each month, the crew picks a topic, plans it, and then goes and does it. The crew formed in February 2026.

💻
Program Nights

A Thursday evening at our studio to get into the month's topic and start building: Python, Minecraft, Roblox, marble runs, Rube Goldberg machines, 3D printing, and the studio's XRP robots.

🧭
Sunday Adventures

A Sunday afternoon that takes the topic out into the world: a geocaching hunt, the Engineering Expo in White Plains, a day watching battle bots at the Norwalk Havoc Robot League.

🗳️
Youth-Led Planning

An online officers' meeting early in the month, where the crew's elected officers choose the topic and plan the calendar. Rank advancement, service projects, and longer trips as the crew grows.

How It Works

Joining the Crew

1
Visit a meeting
Program meetings are on the third or fourth Thursday of the month, 6 to 8 PM, at our studio. Parents and guardians are welcome to sit in. Email the crew first so they know to expect you.
2
Register with Scouting America
Once you've decided to join, you register through the crew. The adult leaders walk you through the paperwork at a meeting.
3
Plan the next adventure
New members get a say right away. Come by and get started on a project or an adventure.
Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need any Scouting experience?
No. You don't need to have been a Scout, and you don't need to be a scientist. If you're curious and like making things, you'll fit right in.
Is the crew co-ed?
Yes. Venturing is co-ed and open to young people ages 14 through 20.
How is the crew connected to Newburgh Creates?
Every Scouting America unit has a chartered organization that sponsors it, provides its meeting place, and approves its adult leaders. Ours is Newburgh Creates. The crew meets at our studio, uses our equipment, and its adult leaders come from our instructors and coaches.
What does it cost?
Registration fees and crew dues are still being finalized. Ask at a meeting or email the crew for the current numbers. Scholarships are part of everything Newburgh Creates does, so don't let cost stop you from asking.
Who leads it?
The youth officers run the crew. The adult leaders, including Newburgh Creates co-founder Jason Otero and Dave Long, are registered with Scouting America and have completed the Youth Protection Training.
Can adults help?
Yes. Crews need advisors, committee members, and drivers for adventures. If you're a parent or a STEM professional who'd like to volunteer, email the crew.
